Catherine McTurk spent her early years in Paris and New York, moving to London in the 60’s where she studied architectural stained glass at the Royal College of Art. The 70’s and 80’s were spent in Mid Wales, running a stained glass studio, and the 90’s found her in Whitstable where she paints from a studio at home near the sea, also teaching life drawing and painting.
Catherine’s background in architectural glass is evident in her use of transparency and layering of colour, allowing the eye to seek beyond the picture plane. The work has a physicality in its spontaneous mark making, gestural and calligraphic. Catherine aims for immediacy, fluidity and a sense of depth.
“I like to see my work outside galleries: in places of healing, domestic interiors, also offices, where the paintings playful sense of calm can be transmitted.”
