Return to the Sea

From 3 September 2010 to 3 October 2010

Return to the Sea is the first solo show by artist Elysia Merrett featuring original abstracts and limited edition prints directly inspired by the local coastline. Elysia’s main source of inspiration for the artwork in this show came from nature, from its atmosphere and tranquillity to its glorious colours and complex shapes.

Elysia’s recent work has sought to create compositions of light, decay, growth and rebirth. The grandeur of nature, the sweeping landscapes and the powerful majesty of the sea remain integral components of the work. In referencing these majestic natural forces she creates deeply dramatic and evocative abstract canvases.

Through an explorative utilization of space and with the use of transparent layers to build up a narrative transition between elements, a highly abstract composition is constructed that still remains integrally inspired by natural phenomena. Throughout her work soft and sombre natural hues are complemented with brief flashes of pure brilliant colour, reflecting the blossoming of new growth.

Through her work she hopes to create visually engaging and thoughtful compositions that contain extravagant and believable worlds that echo the beauty of our own.
